EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US against five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were central to campaigns to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.

The restrictions were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This row risks becoming part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.

Additional Updates Reported Today

In other legal developments:

  • A federal judge has blocked efforts to reduce federal homeland security funding to local governments that do not comply with certain immigration enforcement policies. The official stated the action was “another example” of linking government assistance to policy compliance.
  • Approval was given for the dispatch of hundreds of national guard troops to New Orleans prior to the holiday period, alongside an active immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau will consent to take in a limited number of individuals from the US in return for increased assistance, after concluding a formal agreement with US authorities.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has initiated legal action to demand the removal of the current president’s name from a well-known performing arts center in the capital.

Experts have also noted that recent statements regarding Venezuelan oil reflect a broader belief in some quarters of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with historical international actions.
