The Himalayan nation's Political Landscape Sees Major Partnership Formed By TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant move ahead of next year's general election, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Tackle Youth Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.

"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.

The September uprising was triggered by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Terms of the Fresh Electoral Agreement

According to the official pact, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political leadership. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Wider Political Discussions Underway

In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister recently held consultations with a number of leading political leaders. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the uprising.

Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a collective duty. The message affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
