Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge System This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay technology

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in implementing video review systems.

Video review systems will be launched at The Championships this year.

Athletes are granted the right to contest particular decisions made by the chair umpire, echoing the practice already in place at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move comes just a season following the AELTC implemented ELC, which brought an end to the 147-year tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the number of reviews a competitor can ask for.

A Recent Example

A recent example took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire watched a replay and determined Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

Another change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where fans have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have also announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
